Boosting Competitiveness of a Tomato Processing Company in Greece

Summary

EAFRD funds enhance competitiveness of a Greek tomato processing company through modernisation of equipment and infrastructures and upgrade of hygienic conditions of the working environment.

Background

D. Nomikos was established in 1915 as the first tomato processing facility in South Eastern Europe. The company processes over 120,000 tonnes of fresh fruits every season and deals exclusively with tomato processing. It is specialised in sales to industrial buyers for further processing and packaging. D. Nomikos has always been at the cutting edge of technological innovation and product development and each year invests at least 50% of net revenue in new equipment and plant modernisation.

Objective

In line with the company’ strategy for enhancing competitiveness and meeting the market’s needs, EAFRD funds have been targeted to the modernisation of the equipment of the production line and the factory’s infrastructure with major benefits for the overall hygienic conditions of the raw tomatoes’ treatment.

Main activities

The investments envisaged by the project include: i) the modernisation of the existing processing and packaging equipment and the replacement of the specific packaging equipment used for working in an aseptic environment; ii) the upgrade of the biological cleaning complex in Domokos premises and the construction of a new water tank, which allows for the rationalisation of water resources.

Results & Benefits

The company’s increased performance benefits the whole supply-chain and the local economy. Investments increased up-stream links with the local market providing raw material and services, expanded the factory’s absorption capacity and provided incentives for young farmers to enter into the business. Finally, investments generate job creation among the local community. The market and the consumers benefit from higher quality products, hygiene conditions and packaging standards.

Lessons learnt

Continuous research of higher technological standards in production processes and modernisation of production infrastructure are key for ensuring enhanced competitiveness of agri-food companies and reinforce links with up-stream (providers) and down-stream (consumers) actors of the whole supply-chain.
