Background

Since 2005 traditional craft makers have been developing individual handicrafts, which can be described as a mixture of artisanal and contemporary art. Despite their knowledge, experience, creativity and increasing market demand, they found that their business activities were not proving to be sustainable, so there was a risk of them having to abandon their activity.

Objective

The main objective of the project was to turn the production methods for specific traditional crafts into a semi-industrial production system capable of producing specific products based on the traditional arts of the Alto Minho region.

Main activities

The main activity of the project was investment in a new semi-industrial system, which increases the production capacity and allows diversification of the products produced and offered. The crafts produced are based on 'pulp pieces' and inspired by the technique 'cabeçudos das festas minhotas'. All of the pieces created by Vivian Viana and Ricardo Cabral are different and personalised.

Results & Benefits

The project has resulted in a range of benefits. Firstly it has allowed the business activity to diversify and expand in an organised and sustainable way. This is expanding the scale of production and restoration and modernised the traditional arts of the region. New products that have strong references to Portuguese culture have also been developed. Additionally, 2 new jobs were created.

Lessons learnt

This project has shown that the profitability of a traditional craft can be increased through the sustainable combination of tradition, experience and modern management.
