World Heritage Site Community Project

Cadwyn and Northern Marches Cymru are working on a potential transnational project liking the new Pontcysyllte UNESCO World Heritage Site with an existing site in a European partner area.

Wales’s newest World Heritage site spans the counties of Wrexham and Denbighshire was inscribed in June 2009. It is a 18km stretch of canal including the Poncysyllte Aqueduct. A Community Canal cooperation project has been undertaken for 2 years. Most recently a ‘Friends of the World Heritage Site Community Group’was created with representatives from the length of the canal corridor & continues to engage communities in a range of conservation,interpretation, heritage and wildlife activities.

Having established this active community group we would like to share the experience we have gained and learn from groups that have experience of community engagement along a linier project either relating to World Heritage Sites, canals, aqueducts or heritage features to learn how they have grasped the opportunities presented by such features and now benefiting from them.
