Background

The investor is a local farmer who runs a family business in the field of vegetable cultivation and its distribution. This establishment has invested in refrigeration facilities and a small horticultural packaging unit in response to the increasing awareness of the local public with regards to issues of food health and safety. This local public awareness has induced the setting up and creation of an enterprise which capitalizes on one of the area’s advantages, namely, the production of products of unique quality.

Objective

The investment aims at the creation of a modern, innovative packaging and refrigeration unit for horticultural products. It also aims at the provision of high quality horticulture products which guarantee food health and safety standards through the appropriate quality systems.

Main activities

The investment consists of two main activities: a) establishment of refrigeration facilitiy for horticultural products; b) construction of a small horticultural packaging unit. This involves the construction of a packaging unit and store. The purchase of equipment comprises of two refrigerator chambers, heat insulation equipment, a machine for packaging, IT equipment and a professional vehicle for safe transportation of goods.

Results & Benefits

The investment will result in the expansion of the current business activity through a packaging and refrigeration unit that is innovative for the area. It will facilitate the provision of high quality / high image horticultural products towards the local and national market. In response to the high awareness of food health and food safety issues, the investment will incorporate quality standards to guarantee health and safety. To this end the producer will introduce the HACCP quality system.

Lessons learnt

The reinforcement of entrepreneurship as an alternative economic activity can be a viable solution in remote rural areas, in particular islands. Competitive entrepreneurs who incorporate quality as an integral part of their productive activity are the heart of local economic development. The project reflects also the need to contribute to create better links between the production and marketing stages.
