Young farmer's approach to multifunctional agriculture in Estonia
Summary
Start-up support for a young farmer's diversified business proposal based on producing organic food and providing an 'open farm' facility for raising awareness among urban dwellers about agriculture and organic food production.
Background
24 year old farmer, Indrek Pulk was interested in setting up his own agricultural enterprise in order to demonstrate the economic viability of animal-welfare friendly farming using environmentally sensitive organic production methods. His plans also involved using his farm to promote the benefits of sustainable agriculture to the general public. He developed his project with support from the Estonian University of Life Sciences and the European Multifunctional Farmers organisation.
Objective
His aim focused on using the RDP funds to set up his business and allow him to produce a sustainable supply of self-produced organic feed for his livestock.
Main activities
RDP start-up funds were used to offset the costs of purchasing equipment and machinery required to run his agri-enterprise. Funds were used to co-finance a leveler, harrow, mower and a trailer.
Results & Benefits
Mr Pulk's organic open farm is operational and maintaining its competitiveness. He has taken on additional livestock and their efficiency scores have improved. His farm provides a demonstration facility for effective approaches to sustainable agriculture.
Lessons learnt
Young farmers have a great deal of inspiration and enthusiasm for taking on the commitments involved in securing future food supplies for European citizens. Multifunctional farms offer diversified income opportunities and help consumers understand and appreciate the work involved in producing the food they eat. Welfare and environment-friendly farms act as good ambassadors for the EU agri-food sector.
