EAFRD funds assisted a local community to establish a new wind power turbine which generates electricity used to make the community more self-sufficient in energy for municipal services such as street lighting, schools and other public buildings.

Energy costs in rural areas can be high and communities are able to take advantage of opportunities offered by renewable power to generate their own electricity in order to reduce energy costs and strengthen security of energy supplies. Renewable power can also have positive environmental impacts. Poland’s Pątnów municipality recognised these benefits and used RDP support to help improve its self-sufficiency of energy supplies.

The project aimed to improve the quality of life in Pątnów municipality by constructing a new 1.00 MW wind turbine. The overall objective was to help the municipality generate its own electricity for enhancing community services and facilitating energy-related cost savings by the municipality.

The project works involved the purchasing and establishing a 1.00 MW wind turbine.

The municipality is now more self-sufficient in the supply of power and the project results have included cost savings for electricity used to power street lighting and primary schools and other public buildings located in the municipality. Environmental benefits associated with lower emissions and reduced energy transport are also project outcomes.

RDP funds can be used to help rural communities become more self-sufficient in their energy supplies and renewable power helps local public sector bodies contribute to national obligations concerning greenhouse gas emissions.
