Background

A food company, Sagem SRL, in Romania owned a poultry slaughterhouse facility and in 2007 they purchased a poultry farm (SAFIR) aiming to develop and expand the business. In recent years four production buildings were fully upgraded using SAGEM's own resources. EAFRD funds (measure 121 - farm modernisation) were then sought to redevelop eight others.

Objective

The main aim was to develop a fully integrated production, processing and marketing system for poultry. Specifically, eight old production rearing facilities would be completely replaced to modern (EU) standards. This would enable the farm-slaughterhouse to further expand production of high quality chickens in an integrated rearing-processing-marketing system for the Romanian market.

Main activities

The project activities including all aspects of planning and implementing the full redevelopment of 8 poultry production units, including design, planning approval, application and arrangement of funding, contracting of development services, and equipment supply. The facilities were then made operational and the production, processing and marketing systems were fully integrated.

Results & Benefits

The firm now has 12 primary production poultry units to supply the slaughterhouse and marketing end of the business. About 400 000 broiler chickens are produced annually for slaughter within 6 production cycles. A total of 26 jobs have been created. Company profit will reach approximately 900 000 EUR in the first year, rising to 1 million EUR in the fifth year.

Lessons learnt

A specialist development consultancy company managed the development and was a very important contributor to the success of the project. It was particularly useful for understanding and satisfying the requirement of the Paying Agency for accessing the available EAFRD funds.
