Agriculture and Food Development Authority of Ireland (Teagasc)

Institution overall role: Established in 1988, Teagasc is the national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry and rural communities. It is a client-based organisation and operating in partnership with all sectors of the agriculture and food industry and with rural development agencies. The organisation employs over 1,200 staff at 60 locations throughout Ireland with an annual operating budget of more than €160 million. Having close alliances with research, advisory and training agencies throughout the world, around 75% of Teagasc's yearly budget comes from the Irish state and EU funding, with the balance generated from earned income. About 40% of the budget is devoted to research with the remainder split between advisory and education services.

Role and priorities/objectives in knowledge transfer & innovation: Teagasc’s main strategic aim is to support science-based innovation in the agri-food sector and wider bio-economy so as to underpin profitability, competitiveness and sustainability of rural areas. This is achieved through it’s three operational pillars of: research and innovation; knowledge transfer (extension); and education and training.
