Ruralia Institute (FI)

Institution overall role: Ruralia Institute is an independently administrated multidisciplinary expert institute at the University of Helsinki. It aims to improve the welfare and livelihoods of rural people through research, development, education and training. Its activities include multidisciplinary research, education and research-based innovation development based on scientific competence and practical knowledge. The Institute is involved in regional, national and international cooperation. Ruralia Institute consists of two units/sites: Mikkeli and Seinäjoki.

Role and priorities/objectives in knowledge transfer & innovation: The multidisciplinary approach gives priority to research and innovation with entrepreneurship, policy, culture, communities and services, while initiatives in the organic food chains sector are horizontal covering ecological farming to consumers. There is an emphasis on co-operation and co-operative entrepreneurship for the well-being of society alongside economic improvement.

Research & innovation links: Ruralia Institute has wide regional, national and international networks that include both academic institutions and organizations responsible for rural development. Transnational projects play an important role in the activities of the institute.
