Background

The activity of the enterprise was initially specialised in providing plumbing services to the local communities. The economic crisis, as well as the increasing competition posed by bigger companies in the area was threatening the viability of the business. Adding value to the wood extracted locally came as a natural response.

Objective

The aim of this Commission funded project was to develop and diversify the business of the enterprise by providing high quality carpentry products that would place the small enterprise on an advantaged niche in the local and regional market.

Main activities

Machinery and equipment necessary for the production of beams, floor boards, window frames and other wooden and carpentry related products were purchased. A component of vocational training was included into the application, taking into account the fact that the staff of the enterprise was not entirely specialised in managing such machinery and equipment.

Results & Benefits

Due to such efficient and easy to maintain machinery and equipment the enterprise was enabled to provide high quality products increasingly in demand, developing constant and reliable relationships with the main distributors for PVC windows and doors in the region. Further, four new employment opportunities were a result of this project.

Lessons learnt

“It’s never too late to start over again. Advice for others: read carefully the guidelines, business planning and market prospecting. Despite the bureaucracy involved in the process, EU money helped us to develop a market niche for our products. With perseverance and hard work success can be achieved. ” The enterprise is currently applying again for Commission funds for recycling the wooden wastes and diversifying the range of products.
