Production of high quality organic aromatic plants allowed a group of 12 farmers to work collaboratively in the face of tough market conditions, thus modernizing agricultural production, improving quality of products and increasing farmers’ incomes.

Twelve farmers formed the Cooperative of Agricultural Producers Fafe (COFAFE) to collaborate in the production of high-quality organic Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAP).

The main objective of the project was to maximize the income of farmers by ensuring a steady supply chain. The joint action allowed the 12 farmers to produce an aggregate quantity which gives them a better position in the market.

COFAFE implemented the project in a total area of 22 ha; offering services such as processing, storing and selling of the final products. The main activities undertaken were to: i) produce medicinal and aromatic plants and increase their production; ii) process the plants - drying them and extracting essential oils; iii) marketing fresh/dried plants and essential oils; iv) buy the equipment to be used by all members; v) provide members with technical support.

The project was considered innovative in the area. The main benefits were: i) development and modernization of agriculture as well as the improvement of the quality of the products; ii) improvement of the profitability of the farms activities through the production of certified organic products of high quality; iii) increase in exports; iv) strengthened cohesion and cooperation among producers.

Cooperation among different producers can contribute to enhancing market conditions for farmers, which can then sell their products at better prices and consequently increase their income .
