Background

Rural areas provide many business opportuntities. However, they require new knowledge and a different approach based on skills and information; entrepreneurial spirit and innovation; quality and excellence - all with a touch of rural authenticity. Among the reasons for the low productivity of farms in this LAG region is the increasing average age and low educational level of farm managers, plus the lack of well educated individuals who wish to become self-employed in the local rural area.

Objective

This project aimed to improve the general computer literacy of the key economic actors (local businesses, including farmers) in the LAG area with a view to teaching them how to use basic computer functions; to organise and manage data folders and files; to write, format and print text; to be able to use main internet services and e-mail, and; to develop and operate their own web pages. On-going mentoring was also available.

Main activities

The main project activities were: a) delivery of motivational information workshops; b) provision of training by using a computer literacy programme for adults; c) delivery of website development workshops; d) development of trial web pages; e) development and operation of new web pages and their use, and; f) advice and support for web page maintainance and administration (mentoring).

Results & Benefits

There has been a noticeable improvement in computer literacy in the LAG area, including i) improved skills in the develop and management of web pages (10 new web pages were established by local businesses), and ii) improvements in information flow and communication between local businesses.

Lessons learnt

The computer literacy of adults (including website development and design) can be increased with targeted support and actions through the LEADER approach.
