Estonia launched a competition in 2011 to identify the best Leader projects in Estonia, in five categories: i) agricultural; ii) rural entrepreneur; iii) environmental; iv) youth; and v) cooperation. Each category had four finalists proposed from a preliminary round of all original nominated projects. The winners were announced at an award event as part of the Leader Summer Seminar 2011 (July), which included a gala dinner with music and dancing. Assessment of effectiveness
The competition fulfilled its aim, and people really became more aware of Leader in Estonia as. The wider publicity showed that local development initiatives in rural areas are really broad. It confirmed that acknowledgement of achievements through competitions like this is important because many good examples are shared with a wider audience. A lesson is that application forms should be simplified and different categories should be visually clearly divided.
