This interactive one-day rural development conference "West Cork:Surviving or Thriving? Innovation, Resilience & Community Spirit in Challenging Times" was designed to stimulate innovative thinking in developing new approaches to local community and economic development in West Cork. The area is a progressive and vibrant rural region of inclusive and engaged communities, where guided by the principle of sustainability, its social, cultural, natural and economic assets are harnessed to achieve an improved quality of life for all.

The conference was intended to address the following questions: "How has West Cork fared against a backdrop of sustained economic decline? What demographic changes have taken place? What is their impact? What are the realities of infrastructural development and service provision in West Cork? What is the adequacy of current policy responses and what challenges remain? How are rural areas meeting current challenges? How can communities stimulate economic development, innovation and employment?"

Assessment of effectiveness
Through a series of presentations and workshops the Rural Development Conference set out to provide a forum for analysis, discussion and debate. The interactive format was designed to stimulate innovative thinking in developing new approaches to local community and economic development. There were 100+ people registered for the conference. The conference was very well received (according to the feedback forms) and provided a platform for people to talk about the challenges in local rural areas.
