Summary
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has developed a dedicated tool on its website, allowing people to search within a large directory of projects that have been funded via the Rural Development Programme for England. This online database is meant to support those interested and potential beneficiaries in finding out valuable experiences and project ideas, including information related to what worked and what were the challenges for these specific projects. Therefore it is in the same time a communication and information/’learning from the other’s experience' tool.

Main purpose
The online database developed by the DEFRA is intended as a communication tool that aims at offering relevant information about projects already implemented in order to give an opportunity to find out what worked for others, what they struggled with and how they overcame the challenges they faced. In addition, it aims at enabling future beneficiaries of RDPE to learn from others’ experiences, while developing new projects for rural development.

The online database is embedded in the DEFRA website and is available in English. The information gathered includes: funding source, budget, date of completion, link to website of the project (if any), contact details of the project initiators, and region in which it was implemented. It offers the possibility to upload documents related to the projects presented. The search engine allows retrieving data by projects and by the regions.

Assessment of effectiveness
As of February 2014, the database contained description of nearly 200 projects. According to feedback from users, people have found it a useful tool to learn from the experiences of others and a good source of inspiration to implement similar projects in new contexts.
