Summary
The Regional Futures Workshops formed a part of the 2012 ‘innovation’ themed year of the Mainland Finland Rural Development Programme. The workshops also served as initiators of local and regional rural strategy development for the next programme period. The Rural Network Unit held a rural developers’ strategy event in February 2012 and officials in charge of running national and EU-funded rural development programmes were asked to review the workshops’ final reports – thereby creating links between regional and national programme efforts. The Rural Network Unit of Finland coordinated the regional futures workshops. And there were 15 workshops in total.

The aim of the 'futures' workshops were to support regional and local strategy work and to ensure regional and local needs are taken into account in national efforts. Another objective was to facilitate discussions on the rural development issues that different regions have in common.

The implementation of the futures workshops was coordinated by Capful Oy, whose representatives attended each workshop and compiled their outcomes. The final reports of the futures workshops will be published on maaseutu.fi.
Assessment of effectiveness
The workshops created links between local, regional and national efforts as regards rural strategy. They helped communicate local needs to those in charge of planning the national Rural Development Programmes and facilitated discussions on issues related to rural development - and common to many different areas, at local, regional and national levels.
