General Committee for Agricultural Cooperation in the European Union (COPA-COGECA)

Institution overall role: With its secretariat located in Brussels, Copa-Cogeca is a representative body for farmers (Copa) and cooperatives (Cogeca) at EU-level. As such it develops policy and provides advocacy services for farmers. Its policy areas include rural development.

Research role: While Copa-Cogeca does not undertake research in the classical sense, it carries out considerable analysis to prepare position papers for its advocacy role in relation to the Common Agricultural Policy.

Rural development research focus: The analysis conducted for position papers provides valuable insights into the policy impacts on farming, food, the environment and wider rural development.

Institutional networking linkages: COPA is made up of 60 organisations from the countries of the European Union and 36 partner organisations from other European countries such as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. Cogeca now has 35 full members and 4 affiliated members from the EU. COGECA also has 36 partner members.

A wide range of fact sheets and position papers are generated and available on the website, including on production aspects, policy, environment, food supply chain, sector and horizontal issues, etc.
