The second meeting of the Thematic Group (TG) on 'Mainstreaming the Bioeconomy' discussed different territorial and local approaches to developing bioeconomy in rural areas. In particular the meeting explored:
- The elements of an enabling local or regional environment for small and middle-sized rural bioeconomy enterprises in terms of rural services, infrastructure and support;
- Existing models to engage local or regional stakeholders (SMEs, farmers, municipalities, citizens, educational institutions, etc.) around rural bioeconomy platforms or clusters;
- How Rural Development Measures and regional development strategies can be deployed, possibly combining different support instruments, to support bioeconomy at local and regional levels.
The discussions underlined the need to reflect local-level needs and priorities in bioeconomy strategies, the potential of bottom-up approaches, as well as the need to increase awareness and understanding of the opportunities bioeconomy provides at all levels.
