Village Paragliding Day in North-east Estonia
Summary
Small-scale EAFRD funding accessed through a LEADER Local Action Group in Estonia has helped to organise a new (and fun) village event introducing local people and visiting tourists to the sport of paragliding.

Background
The NGO Jõhvi Paragliding Club wanted to organise a paragliding day in north-east Estonia to which they could invite all the Estonian paragliders and create an event which was fun for paragliders and for local spectators. The NGO approached their LEADER Local Action Group, the LAG Partnership of the North-East Coast (https://www.kirderannik.ee/), for assistance.
Objective
The aim of this project was to create an event - the Jõhvi Paragliding Day - which introduced people to paragliding, made it more popular and raised people's awareness about the sport. It was hoped this would help increase the quality of life in the rural area, attract more tourists and promote the project as an annual event.
Main activities
Support was received for all activities relating to the organisation of the first Jõhvi Paragliding Day held on July 10, 2010, including a web page for the event; posters in the area, and; advertisments on local radio and in regional publications. The Estonian Open Paramotor Championship (paragliders with an engine and propellor!) was also developed at the same time as an additional part of the Jõhvi Paragliding Day.
Results & Benefits
The event was successfully organised in 2010 and awareness of paragliding was increased among local people with 12 pilots participating in the event and 15 pilots competing in the paramotor competition. A second Jõhvi Paragliding Day is planned for 2011.
Lessons learnt
This was the first project of its type in Estonia and the project leader, Aare Rebban, encourages everyone who has a great idea to talk to their LEADER Local Action Group about how to get support....the sky's the limit!
