The Mosaïque Activities and Entrepreneur Cooperative (CAE Mosaïque)
Summary
CAE Mosaïque was created in a rural area where there was little available assistance to help entrepreneurs develop their activities. The specificity of CAE resides in its collective and cooperative nature.
Background
In the Alpes de Haute Provence region there are no business development facilities, only one business centre and some assistance for long-term training and support for entrepreneurs. In this mountainous region, entrepreneurs are often geographically isolated. The level of qualifications and the characteristics of the department’s “market” result in fragile projects, and businesses with modest turnovers, which are slow to develop.
Objective
The aims of the project are to create new jobs and make them sustainable on a long term basis as well as support entrepreneurs by giving them access to an associate-employee status.
Main activities
CAE Mosaïque offers an economic, legal and social framework in which to test and begin one’s entrepreneurial activity. In the first stage, project managers will receive assistance to help them develop and define the parameters of their projects. When the entrepreneur is ready to begin his activity, he can sign a work contract with the cooperative to become an associate-employee. The CAE then provides the management and administration for his activity.
Results & Benefits
CAE Mosaïque brings together 25 entrepreneurs, of which 6 have already started their activity and signed an associate-employee contract. However, this is still low when compared to the number of entrepreneurs, which experience difficulties in launching their activity. Having started their activities with little recognition from the authorities, CAE Mosaïque has now made itself a known entity with various local partners.
Lessons learnt
The first supported initiatives clearly show that entrepreneurs with project ideas lack commercial skills, which is particularly prevalent during the initial phases of their activity. To remedy this, CAE plans to hire a “multi-sector” marketing and sales person to give entrepreneurs assistance and support project ideas with the necessary skills.
