Young Farmer Support for Mr Gintaras Gedminas
Summary
This Lithuanian RDP project helped a young farmer establish his business and create a sustainable career option for him in agriculture.
Background
Young people represent the future of rural communities and parts of rural Europe are experiencing out migration of younger generations. This is creating problems for the sustainability of farms which can have consequences for the wider rural economy and biodiversity. In order to help balance the demography in rural areas and encourage young people to enter framing as a career, the EAFRD provides financial support to help young farmers set their businesses.
Objective
The project’s main objective was to help Mr Gintaras Gedminas establish his farm business and create a sustainable career option for him in agriculture. His grassland farm produces forage crops for livestock and the project aimed to provide him with the capacity to operate in a cost effective way.
Main activities
Funds were used to co-finance investments in new agri-technology that helps to reduce crop maintenance costs, increase stability in the production cycle and improve the quality of the forage products.
Results & Benefits
The young farmer has improved his capacity to run a viable business, which in turn has positive knock-on benefits for the rural economy and rural community.
Lessons learnt
Supporting young farmers helps keep people in the countryside which helps retain local services and protect farmland habitats from abandonment.
