Learning About the Environment Through Kindergarten
Summary
This project targeted the very young and their parents to enlighten about good environmental care. Interactive means included story creation and telling, puppetry, and designing cotton eco bags. It brought families together for learning.
Background
Early learning can be the best learning, but equally it's never too late to learn. With this in mind, a kindergarten in the Slovenska Bistrica area of north east Slovenia wanted to develop a project to raise awareness among children, their parents and grandparents about taking care of the environment.
Objective
This kindergarten believes that a positive attitude towards nature and a healthy way of living should be developed early in childhood - with parents and wider family playing an important role too. So the aim of this project was to inform children and their families about ecological ideas and activities in an innovative and interesting way. Using interactive means, the intention was to produce items for fun and effective learning.
Main activities
Activities and items planned included development of a children's book with a catchy story, reading and story telling by children, puppet making and a puppet show, and illustrating cotton eco-bags for all.
Results & Benefits
As there was no suitable eco-story for children available, a pre-school teacher was commissioned to write one. The story is special because the children can choose between two alternative endings: a) PVC bags can be substituted with cotton eco-bags; or b) children make useful things from unused PVC bags (so they are not just thrown away). About 900 children and their wider families are participating - with a greater chance of securing this raised awareness through the family learning approach.
Lessons learnt
The local LAG provided strong support in developing and implementing the idea, including dealing with any delays along the way. Good interpersonal communication was indispensable!
