Innovation in Nature Conservation (Birdwatchers and Farmers in Co-operation)
Summary
Novel use of EAFRD funds to support co-operation between farmers and birdwatchers in order to identify new and innovative ways to conserve and encourage biodiversity (especially birdlife) on Swedish farms
Background
The project illustrates possibile actions to be implemented by farmers in collaboration with administrations and NGOs to improve the protection of biodiversity and the maintanance of the landscape without compromising the sustainibility and economic aspects of the farms. It involves mainly arable farms.
Objective
The project aims to find new and innovative ways to protect and develop biodiversity (especially birdlife) on farmland without compromising economic development and sustainibility.
Main activities
The first phase consists of conducting a bird 'inventory' to identify the bird species and their numbers present on the farms involved. The second phase provides farmers with advisory services in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of how to support bird life on the farm and improve biodiversity.
Results & Benefits
Inventories and advisory services haveso far been carried out on 200 farms. By the end of 2010 another 60 farms will have competed their bird inventories and received advice and suggestions on how to improve and protect bird habitats. The high level of commitment by the farmers involved has been very positive and has allowed strong collaboration between farmers and birdwatchers.
Lessons learnt
The high number of people involved, both farmers and birdwatchers, has highlighted the need for appropriate guidelines. It is also very important to maintain frequent contact with the farmers involved in the activities.
