Increasing the Production and Quality of Soy Products in Slovakia
Summary
ALFA BIO has been involved in producing and selling healthy food products, while enhancing the quality of soy product and expanding its market by introducing new technologies.
Background
ALFA BIO was established in 1991 and introduced the production of soy cheese, called tofu, in the former Czechoslovakia. It started as a small family business and then turned into a soy food products company, exporting to neighbouring countries. Thanks to the EAFRD contribution, ALPHA BIO increased its production as well as the quality of its products.
Objective
The main objective was to increase the production of ALFA BIO through introducing new equipment for the production of fermented and unfermented beverages, leguminous spreads and prepared meals.
Main activities
The main activities undertaken included: i) the purchase of new equipment (autoclave for sterilization, cleaning equipment, labeling machine, etc.) in order to increase the capacity and efficiency of the production; ii) the installation of two new production lines to produce fruit drinks with added fermented and unfermented soy ingredients as well as mashed food products; iii) the renovation of buildings for the new production lines and construction of a water treatment plant.
Results & Benefits
The company increased its competitiveness in the soy food market and was able to adapt its products to consumers’ preferences. The new equipment not only contributed to the enhancement of the production efficiency and quality, but also to the improvement of working conditions.
Lessons learnt
The company’s experience in obtaining RDP funds was positive. The implementation of the project was divided into three phases which enabled the company to finance the activities using the cash flow without asking for a bank loan. Payments claims were always submitted at the end of each year in order to receive the funds back in the first months of the following year. Smart timing and good technical planning were important to keep the balance of investments within each stage of the implementation
