Investing for the Future of the Centro Region's Ceramics Industry
Investments were made towards improving facilities for the ceramics industry in the Portuguese villages of Vacariça and Mealhada. The project increased regional sustainability and strengthened the regional ceramics industry supply chain.
The Centro region in Portugal is rich in raw materials and the ceramic industry traditionally plays a pivotal role. In correspondence with the natural conditions, there is a also a significant number of companies operating in this sector.
The objective of the project was to create conditions for increasing production and quality of ceramic products, in particular facilities for maintenance of the related machinery.
The main activities consisted in creation of working space, modernisation and purchase of new equipment, as well as improving management and application of IT tools for business purposes. Furthermore, attention was paid to improving management practices and linkages within the regional economy by creating direct connections (customer-supplier) between the companies in the region.
Results & Benefits
Investment in new equipment and technologies improved the regional ceramics sector's productivity. Development of the links between the entities involved enhanced regional-level industry cohesion. The project has also allowed for a growing independence of the sector from external products or service suppliers. Now all products related to processing ceramics can be delivered within the region. Additionally, the project resulted in the creation of two new jobs.
It is important to focus a project on the real needs of beneficiaries and to establish proximity to the target group.
