Renewable Heating Energy in Hedenäset
Local businesses and forest owners in Northern Sweden joined forces to invest in a heating plant fuelled by wood chips. The raw materials come from the forestry in the local area and energy is produced in an environmentally sustainably fashion.
Dairy production was proving to be not sufficiently profitable for the future project leader. He decided to cease dairy production and diversify into a new and environmentally sound business, namely a heating plant based on renewable energy. He got rid of his 40 cows and his main occupation is now the operation of the heating plant and the cultivation of reed canary grass (a course grass that can grow 2 to 9 feet tall).
To provide renewable and locally produced heating energy.
The main project activities were: 1) Setting up a local company with nine members; 2) Heating plant / boiler instalatlion. A large wood-chip boiler with a capacity of 2000 kilowatts. Annual generation of over four million kilowatt hours of electricity; 3) Laying of culverts and pipes were laid to all of the properties of the owners who wished to be connected to the heating plant. The district heating project was implemented in just two years.
Results & Benefits
Large parts of the village of Hedenäset are provided with renewable and locally produced heating energy. Some 50 buildings in the village are connected and are heated by means of the unique focus on locally generated heating in Hede Isthmus. The power generated is environmentally friendly (mitigating climate change) and contributes to local economic development.
The project shows how, in both a financially and environmentally efficient way, one can replace electricity and fossil fuels in heating, at the same time as moving energy production to the local level. The Hedenäset initiative can now be considered as a model for similar projects throughout Sweden.
