Direct Selling of Local Organic Products - Can Perol
Can Perol Baix Llobregat SL is a joint initiative between six families who co-operate to sell high quality farming produce directly to consumers in the Barcelona metropolitan area.
Formed in February 2008, the inspiration behind Can Perol Baix Llobregat SL came from the experiences of ADV de Frutas in Baix Llobregat in advising individual farmers on organic farming practices.
The objective of Can Perol is to improve business competitiveness of agri-food companies by promoting organic farming produce in the Baix Llobregat area. Direct sales of high quality farm produce are marketed via www.canperol.cat. Other objectives aim to ensure a fair price for the produce supplied by the participating family farms, as well as meet consumer demand for high quality farm products.
The main activities include: creating new marketing channels for local organic produce; marketing quality certified products as Can Perol Baix Llobregat SL is registered with the CCPAE (Catalan council for ecological farming produce); supporting direct selling of products to consumers, helping to ensure a fair price for producers; innovating internet marketing systems via the www.canperol.cat website.
Results & Benefits
The results of the project include: improved competitiveness of the participating rural companies; improved marketing of agri-food products; increased added value of local farming produce in the Baix Llobregat; creation of long term jobs in a peri-urban environment, currently 15 employees of which 11 are women; development of agricultural market infrastructure in the Baix Llobregat; consolidation of production and marketing of organic farming produce.
Low budget projects, if they are based on quality and a good initial idea, can generate significant benefits for rural areas.
