Expansion of Greenhouse Vegetable Production through Setting up a Young Farmer
The Popovo area of Bulgaria traditionally grows wheat and sunflowers, however this female applicant was established as a young farmer to implement a plan to expand into higher-value vegetable production with a view to supplying mainly local markets.
Good potential exists in the Popovo municipality for diversification from mainly traditional cereals and oilseed farming into higher value vegetable production principally supplying local markets. This applicant planned diversification and expansion of her enterprise to increase production, improve marketing and income and secure employment.
The main aim was to develop the vegetable production element of the farm enterprise, and to orient it more towards the market through increased production and sales of high quality, high value vegetables.
Preparation of a business plan for the expansion of the vegetable enterprise and improved marketing of produce was the key starting point. The National Agricultural Advisory Service played an important role in providing planning advice and application preparation. The development plan included aspects related to improved land management and integrated production systems, better use of machinery and equipment, upgrading of buildings and staff training.
Results & Benefits
The investment is expected to result in an increase in vegetable growing area and the volume of quality vegetables produced, higher value products sold into the local markets, and the creation of 2 jobs (local women), in addition to securing employment and income for the owners' family.
This young farmer made good use of business and service relationships to enhance the prospects of the investment being successful e.g. with the National Agricultural Advisory Service, inputs suppliers, labour market, etc She also made use of opportunities to improve her technical knowledge about modern vegetable crop production and enterprise management.
