Viimi Active Ladies Social Centre - Maintaining Traditions through the generations

Viimsi has very limited inter-generational links. Through this project the Young Women's Council in Viimsi has been provided with a centre and now hosts activities to promote social inclusion and integration between different generations.

In Estonia, Viimsi is the ‘municipality of young people’ with the average age of the population being just 32.5 years. Viimsi is also the region with the highest birth rate and most of the population are new settlers, without any close family relations in the area. This means there are no natural links between the generations and few possibilities for passing on culture and traditions.

The aim of this LEADER supported project was to create a social centre in Viimsi, to support the preservation of the culture and traditional values of the area, to promote social inclusion in general and inter-generational links in particular. This was to be done through encouraging the youth and young families to participate in seminars and working groups and also cultural activities.

Main activities

The first activity undertaken by the project was establishing an information centre for youth and young families within the complex of Laidoneri manor. This was followed by the organisation of specific activities and training that supported and shared knowledge about heritage culture, family traditions, savings and household management, relaxing art and handicraft activities, healthy diet, cooking and other important activities.

Results & Benefits

The information centre is operational and the Association of Viimsi Active Ladies has made valuable use of it as a place to organise their social activities which many people have participated in, stimulating the integration and participation of young people into community life. The centre also contributes to enhancing the attractiveness of the area, which already contains a health club and coffee house.

Lessons learnt

The Association of Viimsi's Active Ladies had already been active for 5 years. The project has shown that EAFRD funding can significantly contribute to achieving already existing goals by supporting a new range of activities. In this case, initiatives which are capable of supporting the role of women in the local community as well as assisting with the integration of new generations.
