Cultivating Competitiveness on a Lithuanian Arable Farm

EAFRD funding helped an arable farm modernise its equipment and improve its productivity capacity in order to strengthen business competitiveness.

Farm modernisation offers useful benefits as a development tool for rural economies, especially in transitional areas or sectors. Modern technologies can help increase productivity, improve yields, create cost savings and offer environmental benefits. Lithuania’s RDP acknowledges these benefits and provides support to encourage its agricultural sector to modernise as a way of sustaining and strengthening its competitiveness.

The project’s core objective focused on improving the competitiveness of an arable farm managed by Mr Rimvydas Janušauskas. His farm produces wheat, oilseed rape and barley. Productivity improvements were sought through the use of new equipment for crop production.

Main activities

The project helped provide co-finance for Mr Janušauskas’ own investment in new fertiliser sprinkling equipment and disc harrows.

Results & Benefits

The project benefits include reduced production costs and increased sales revenues, improved tillage efficiency, increased productivity, improved quality of productivity, and improved environmental management.

Lessons learnt

Modernising agricultural techniques can help rural economies to compete more effectively. Environmental benefits can also be created through improved fuel efficiency of modern equipment as well lower impact cultivation methods.
