Liquid Manure Reservoir Infrastructure
EAFRD funds assisted in the construction of a high-capacity reservoir for storage of liquid manure at a Czech pig farm, replacing smaller facilities thus reducing potential environmental damage from the transportation of manure to larger facilities.
Liquid manure from the pig shelters at Měřín farm was stored in small reservoirs at individual shelters. In winter, when the liquid manure could not be sprayed on fields, it had to be transported for storage at high-capacity reservoirs in other farms. Not only did this have high operational and financial costs, but the potential risk of leakage and significant environmental damage was increased. Therefore, the plan was to construct a new reservoir with large storage capacity.
The project aimed to construct and make operational a liquid manure reservoir of sufficient capacity to store pig effluent from the Měřín farm for at least 6 months, thus (a) reducing the risk of serious environmental damage from spillage, (b) lowering the operational costs, and (c) moving a step forward towards the production of biogas from a planned subsequent investment.
In order to achieve the objective EAFRD funding was used for contracting a number of experts such as a reservoir technician, a project manager, constructors, accountants, zoo technicians, agronomists and administrative support.
Results & Benefits
The results achieved include: (a) the construction of a new manure storage reservoir of 3656 m3 with 6.5 months reserve, (b) the establishment of increased environmental protection mechanisms through modern storage facilities and equipment within an intensive agricultural production enterprise, and (c) saving of operational expenses of 2 500 euro annually for transporting liquid manure.
High quality and timely planning is critical for making good progress with such an investment. Teamwork by all concerned, and the ability to work against deadlines and handle pressure was important. It is crucial that the reservoir operates at minimum operational costs. This will be achieved by adhering to plans of control and reservoir technology maintenance.
