This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure illustrates how the mainstreaming of the bioeconomy is being accelerated by Rural Development Programmes (RDPs) around Europe.

A sustainable bioeconomy, while it benefits everyone, has particular relevance for rural communities. The twelve projects featured in this Projects Brochure illustrate how RDPs are helping rural communities seize the opportunities offered by the bioeconomy through the production of sustainable food and feed, innovative bio-based products, renewable energy, environmentally sustainable growth and awareness raising.

This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure presents examples of methods and approaches that have been used across Europe to deliver results on the topics of rural broadband, digital access to market, farm modernisation, market development, rural diversification and sustainable communities.

It hopes to provide inspiration on how to develop the strategies and tools for different types of rural areas to be economically competitive, while at the same time preserving their natural resources and social cohesion.

This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure explores how Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding – co-financed by the EAFRD – has been used not only to support individual rural businesses, but also to create the kind of enabling environment that allows businesses to prosper in rural areas.

Supporting rural business usually means providing strategic interventions that can increase the likelihood of successful, self-sustaining economic activities in rural areas.

The projects highlight inspiring examples of how to provide advice, training and networking opportunities to rural businesses, as well as targeted investment in the digital and physical infrastructure needed by rural business, both on-farm and in other rural sectors of activity.

This special edition of the ENRD’s EAFRD Project Examples Brochure has been designed to celebrate the EAFRD’s achievements during the 2007-2013 programming period and to inspire similar high quality projects for the 2014-2020 period.

This issue highlights the relevance of EU Rural Development policy to wider societal challenges and the practical opportunities to deliver the greatest positive impact on the ground. It focuses on responses to the challenges of limited rural broadband internet access, global climate change and the current refugee crisis. It goes on to explore some of the new and developing EU policy tools: multi-funded CLLD; the European Fund for Strategic Investments; and the RDP Cooperation Measure.

This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure explores how people in rural areas have used EAFRD support to respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by the recent influx of migrants and refugees into the European Union.

Without judgement on broader migration policy questions, the brochure aims to provide a picture of what is actually happening in several rural areas in Europe to deal with the evolving situation in more positive ways. It presents projects under the sub-themes of ‘changing the narrative’, ‘jobs and the labour market’ and ‘coordinated responses’.

This issue examines the importance of stakeholder involvement in rural development and the methods that can be used to support it. It provides information and guidance on the main types of stakeholder groups in rural development, the EU legal basis of stakeholder involvement and ways in which it can contribute to rural development policy. The issue provides examples of good stakeholder involvement.

The role of EU agriculture and rural development policies in the delivery of public goods in rural areas throughout Europe.

Rural Europe plays a central role in the provision of environmental services such as preserving biodiversity, contributing to climate regulation—by reducing emissions and sequestering carbon, protecting water quality and availability, preserving soil functionality and air quality, reinforcing resilience to flooding and/or fire and maintaining landscape values.

This issue of EU Rural Review explains the contribution that the Rural Development policy brings to the EU´s climate action agenda.
