This edition focuses on communications uncovering the latest thinking from rural networkers while profiling some great examples of communication using digital channels, on-farm knowledge exchange and marketing initiatives to support Rural Development policy implementation.

The edition also includes the regular news and updates from the ENRD and the EU, as well as a collection of rural perspectives delving into topics ranging from bioeconomy value chains in Southern European countries, to initiatives to improve rural broadband, to a World Bank economic report that demonstrates how the CAP benefits the rural economy and drives growth.

This briefing provides references to a selection of planning tools to help practitioners, local decision-makers, and community groups to design and develop sustainable rural services. Even though the focus is clearly set on rural services, each tool can equally fit other types of intervention.

The factsheet overviews the challenges faced by rural businesses, specific tailor-made responses and smart business-support tools, the practice of business accelerators, and Rural Development Programme (RDP) support.
It was prepared as background material for the ENRD Seminar on ‘Revitalising Rural Areas through Business Innovation’ (Brussels, March 2017).

This edition gives a lot of attention to what happened at the major European Conference on Rural Development in Cork, Ireland 5-6 September 2016 – known as ‘Cork 2.0’. The thematic section has “A focus on… Cork 2.0", providing an overview of the event, the main messages of the workshops, the resulting ‘Cork 2.0 Declaration’ in full and a series of 20 different participant reactions.

The edition also includes the regular “News and updates” from the ENRD and the EU as well as the usual “Rural issues, Rural perspectives” section. This features a range of stakeholder voices on topics ranging from transnational cooperation to local consultation and from a growing European network of artists to the first ever rural digital hub in Ireland.
