This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure explores how Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding – co-financed by the EAFRD – has been used to support the sustainable use of natural resources, particularly water and soil.

The concept of resource efficiency is based on the idea of ‘doing more with less’. In this context, the projects featured in this edition highlight inspiring practices of creating greater economic and environmental value from fewer inputs.

The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) is providing valuable support to Europe’s rural economies, encouraging a faster rate of change towards a more sustainable agricultural sector.

This EAFRD Projects Brochure considers the new European Union rural development priorities for the 2014-2020 programming period. It looks at existing EAFRD projects to ask what inspiration we can take from the past to help us achieve these priority objectives in the future.

The brochure refers to the ideas and achievements of more than 50 projects - implemented using EAFRD funding support from the 2007-2013 programming cycle. Of these, twelve are highlighted and presented in more detail, to reflect particular approaches to achieving the new priorities.

A wide range of different environmental services can be assisted through the EAFRD using financial support that is available to EU Member States’ Rural Development Programmes (RDP).

This publication’s examples demonstrate the range of positive benefits in Member States from food-related rural development activity under the CAP.

In this publication RDP project case studies show how Europe’s rural areas can benefit from adopting environmentally-sustainable approaches to their development.
