Networking – and rural development networking is a prime example of this – is first and foremost about people. It is about coming together, developing new ways of thinking and operating, and building something new, together; something that is bigger than the sum of its individual parts; and something that benefits rural communities everywhere.

On the occasion of networX – the largest ever gathering of the European rural networking community to be organised under the 2014-2020 programming period – we want to salute the human spirit of networking and mark 10 years of the European Network for Rural Development (ENRD).

This book highlights rural networking through the eyes of young people, as they are the ones who will determine the future development of Europe’s countryside. It also illustrates how networks support rural entrepreneurship, the environment, rural heritage and vibrant rural communities – areas where the impact of rural networking is unmistakable.

This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure explores how Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding – co-financed by the EAFRD – has been used to support the sustainable use of natural resources, particularly water and soil.

The concept of resource efficiency is based on the idea of ‘doing more with less’. In this context, the projects featured in this edition highlight inspiring practices of creating greater economic and environmental value from fewer inputs.

The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) is providing valuable support to Europe’s rural economies, encouraging a faster rate of change towards a more sustainable agricultural sector.

This briefing was prepared as background material for the ENRD Thematic Work on 'Social Inclusion' (2017-2018).
It covers topics such as the role of arts and culture, young people in rural areas and the role of community centres.

This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure explores how people in rural areas have used Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding - co-financed by the EAFRD - to support actions that can be part of the ‘Transition to Greener Rural Economies’.

This transition is about taking advantage of economic opportunities that are environmentally and socially sustainable. It is also about pursuing improved environmental performance in ways that are economically and socially viable.

The projects reflect some of the breadth of relevant approaches that can be supported under the (RDPs), including: making a living from biodiversity; doing more with less; promoting green tourism; generating renewable energy from rural production; installing renewable energy infrastructure in rural areas; and cooperating for a greener economy.

This is the main report of a dedicated ENRD workshop which explored ways of responding to demographic change and promoting social inclusion in rural areas. It overviews existing hubs of activity and inspiring initiatives from across Europe around specific social inclusion and demographic change issues, including migrants and refugees, integration of Roma, role of arts and culture, young people and women.

This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure explores how people in rural areas have used EAFRD support to respond to the challenges and opportunities presented by the recent influx of migrants and refugees into the European Union.

Without judgement on broader migration policy questions, the brochure aims to provide a picture of what is actually happening in several rural areas in Europe to deal with the evolving situation in more positive ways. It presents projects under the sub-themes of ‘changing the narrative’, ‘jobs and the labour market’ and ‘coordinated responses’.

This is the main report of the fifth meeting of the National Rural Networks (NRNs) in the 2014-2020 period.
It discusses ways of stimulating rural development through arts and culture initiatives.

"News and updates" include ENRD and NRN work to ‘Unlock the potential of the RDPs’, the European Fund for Strategic Investments and the new EU Circular Economy action plan.

The "Rural issues, Rural perspectives" section features stakeholder voices on topics ranging from the new global agreement on climate change to creative rural regeneration and from rural entrepreneurship to Roma inclusion.

This edition also features "A focus on… LEADER Cooperation", with reports and interviews on inter-regional, inter-Fund and third country cooperation examples, as well as efforts to harmonise application processes across RDPs.

"News and updates" include the ENRD CP work programme 2015-2016; LEADER cooperation events; and new info sheets on Partnership Agreements and Rural Development Programmes.

The "Rural issues, Rural perspectives" section features stakeholder voices on topics ranging from rural broadband to rural culture and from rural-fisheries cooperation to remote islands’ opportunities.

This edition also features "A Focus On… Communicating the RDPs", with interviews and reports on four national approaches.

A wide range of different environmental services can be assisted through the EAFRD using financial support that is available to EU Member States’ Rural Development Programmes (RDP).
