It focuses on the increased production of renewable energy as an element of the clean energy transition in rural areas and shows how CAP interventions can be used to support and upscale sustainable energy production linked to agriculture and forestry.

This factsheet suggests how Member States could support the transition to clean energy in the agriculture and forestry sectors through the choices they make in designing and implementing their CAP Strategic Plans (CSPs), in particular to meet the new CAP’s specific objectives of ‘contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation and also to sustainable energy’. Ideas and examples emerging from the ENRD’s Thematic Group (TG) on the European Green Deal and Rural Areas are presented as a source of inspiration for Member States’ Managing Authorities (MA) and stakeholders.

This paper presents two examples of different approaches to innovative solutions on the climate change and low-carbon transition of agriculture in the EU sugarbeet sector, based on experiences of two cooperatives in The Netherlands and in Italy.

In 2017, Slovakia introduced three “criteria for the sustainable use of biomass” to be applied to all biomass-related projects financed by the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF). This case study describes the need for such criteria in Slovakia, their content and application, and the impacts expected.

This thematic Briefing is part of the series developed by the ENRD to assist Managing Authorities and rural stakeholders in designing supportive frameworks for Smart Villages initiatives in certain key domains. It focuses on renewable energy communities.

This is the highlights report of the 10th Thematic Group Meeting on ‘Smart Villages’.

The meeting focused on how Smart Villages can support a transition to a low carbon economy in  rural areas. Participants discussed the European Renewable Energy Directive and how it requires Member States to create an enabling environment for Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) in order to help meet Europe’s targets for climate change.

This edition of the EAFRD Projects Brochure illustrates how the mainstreaming of the bioeconomy is being accelerated by Rural Development Programmes (RDPs) around Europe.

A sustainable bioeconomy, while it benefits everyone, has particular relevance for rural communities. The twelve projects featured in this Projects Brochure illustrate how RDPs are helping rural communities seize the opportunities offered by the bioeconomy through the production of sustainable food and feed, innovative bio-based products, renewable energy, environmentally sustainable growth and awareness raising.

This summary overviews the green economy initiatives of a British Local Action Group (LAG), including a renewable energy network of experts, community groups and businesses, and resulting in energy savings and creation of new jobs.
The example was presented at an ENRD Seminar on LEADER/CLLD.
This summary overviews an 'energy vision' for the area covered by an Austrian Local Action Group (LAG), including promotion of energy- and wood-innovations, and awareness raising.
