A variety of rural stakeholders gathered to share practical examples of bioeconomy initiatives in rural territories across the EU and discuss the role of EU policy instruments to support sustainable bio-based initiatives in rural areas. They concluded that the three main elements in mainstreaming the bioeconomy are: capacity building, cooperation and a holistic approach to sustainability.

This issue of the EU Rural Review explores some of the ways in which social and environmental sustainability can contribute to economic growth in Europe’s rural areas.

It highlights some of the particular opportunities for rural areas from the transition to the green economy, including through the move to the low-carbon economy and more sustainable farming and forestry. It also looks at practical aspects of green economy projects and how cooperation can help deliver improved outcomes.

Throughout, it considers how the Rural Development Programmes (RDPs) can best support efforts in these areas.

The highlights report of the 4th Meeting of the ENRD Thematic Group on European Green Deal and rural areas focuses on local and territorial environment and climate initiatives in promoting the green transition. These play an important role in generating collective action and local ownership, and provide an effective way to promote the uptake of environmental schemes among rural actors.
