Diversifying a young female farmer’s income by investing in farm tourism

A young female farmer decided to renovated an old building on the family farm and offer accommodation for tourists.

Project summary: 

The beneficiary, 23 year old Sonia took over the family that has been cultivating vegetables for almost 30 years and selling them to large national retailers. She wanted to have greater contact with people at the farm and applied for RDP support to restructure one of the farm’s buildings with a view to offering tourist accommodation.

Project results: 

Tourists will be hosted for at least 4-5 months/year.

The hospitality venture is expected to bring in an additional 20% of the overall farm business prior to the investment.
