A public consultation is now inviting feedback on a new EU Integrated Nutrient Management Action Plan. The European Commission’s plans recognise that nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates are essential for life, yet the presence of excess nutrients in the air, water, and soil can adversely affect public health, climate, and the environment.
An EU Integrated Nutrient Management Action Plan would be tasked to help meet the European Green Deal’s 2030 target of reducing nutrient losses by 50%, while ensuring no deterioration in soil fertility. Farmers, industry, civil society organisations and citizens are encouraged to have their say about how the Action Plan can identify and address key factors causing nutrient pollution. Other aspects of the survey seek opinions on stimulating markets for recovered nutrients. Conclusions from a Call for Evidence earlier this year provide more context and the consultation is open until 26 August 2022.
