Context: 

Nowadays rural areas are facing problems of depopulation, loss of basic services (schools and hospitals) and economic crisis. Promotion of sustainable tourism and enhancement of cultural and natural heritage, with focus on inland waters, are valid answers to these problems.

Project idea summary: 

Nowadays rural areas are facing problems of depopulation, loss of basic services (schools and hospitals) and economic crisis. Promotion of sustainable tourism and enhancement of cultural and natural heritage, with focus on inland waters, are valid answers to these problems.
WASST project aims to multiply effects of ABBAS (Sport Fishing Tourism) project, which was implemented in 2014 and 2015 in Sardinia, Sweden and Finland, promoting rural areas and inland waters through sports.
The project includes a series of local activities (Local meetings with stakeholders; Creation of a Rural network of entrepreneurs and sport associations; Creation of sports itineraries; On line platform; Creation of an App) and a common action, which consists in the creation of an international rural festival of sports (fishing, kayak, canoe, rowing, trail running, orienteering, climbing, hiking and mountain bike).

Objectives: 

WASST project’s overall objective is to develop sustainable tourism in the rural areas.
Specific objective of WASST project is to promote active tourism in the lakes and rivers areas of Central Sardinia and involved LAGs
In order to reach this objective, the following common actions will be implemented:
- International Seminars for entrepreneurs on promotion of sustainable and active tourism through sports and organization of sports events;
- Bottom-up creation of an International Rural Festival of Sports (RURFEST);
- Implementation of RURFEST.
