Context:

The area covered by the LAG Durance Provence is at the confluence of the Durance and the Bleone rivers. It includes 14 municipalities (21 265 inhabitants in total). It can be described as a network of small rural communities organized around the main towns that are Château-Arnoux Saint-Auban, Les Mées, Peyruis and Malijai. These four urban centers concentrate 65% of the population.
A significant part of the area’s strategy is to develop a clean and sustainable territory.
Within this strategy, we can identify two main goals towards building an “eco-territory”:
- reducing waste production and enhancing our garbage-processing network
- educating local businesses to sustainable principles and dynamising economic development towards local economic networks, green economy, circular economy.

Project idea summary:

We are looking for cooperation partners to work on environmental education of the general public as well as public and private actors. The Durance Provence territory is currently undergoing a renewal of its economic sector (due to deindustrialization, growing tourism and demographic change) and it requires all types of actors to commit to more responsible and sustainable practices.
The LEADER program for 2014-2020 in Durance Provence therefore aims to support local economic networks, circular economy and green initiatives in order to become an “eco-territory”.

Objectives:

The objectives of our environmental strategy are:

Objective 1: Educating and raising awareness of environmental issues
That is to educate all citizens as well as public and private actors of the area to the environment and its issues in order to help them adapt their behaviors and practices.
This can be achieved for example with: exhibition and/or conferences on environmental protection issues; creating educational gardens; instructing educational workshops; using artistic statements to raise awareness on the environment …

Objective 2: Reducing and/or recycling waste
That is setting up an economic sector around treating, transforming, reusing or recycling garbage, so as to reduce waste.
Examples of possible projects could include: setting up a composting platform; educating the public to reduce food waste; setting up new tools to enhance and facilitate selective sorting for recycling; developing spaces for collecting recyclable materials and selling products made out of recycles materials …

Objective 3: Developing sustainable economy
Supporting local networks for green economy and sustainable economic initiatives.
These can include for example: developing and/or creating a production line (machinery, tools, equipment …) for ecologic industry, Eco-construction or sustainable mobility … ; Supporting offers for new services and/or products (market study, business plan, certifications…); Setting up new agricultural or local know-how projects (diversification, transformation, local networks …); Implementing a common approach for Organizational Social Responsibility (OSR) …
