Background

The large amount of timber felling in the Suceava and Bistrita counties following the strong wind in 2007 had to be removed in proper time from forests and with reduced environmental impact. The team from Oct Trans, who obtained the contract for managing the wood extraction, realised that modern equipment was required for handling the task. EAFRD funds became quickly available through the new RDP.

Objective

Ensuring sustainable forest management was the main objective of the project. It aimed to reduce the time required for timber extraction and protect the environment by reducing wastes and oil loses in the forests. Ensuring better working conditions for the team members represented also an objective.

Main activities

The project activities mainly focused on purchasing the equipment necessary for managing the timber. The priorities were one tractor crane, one forestry tractor with trailer and one articulated tractor. Having in mind the hard working conditions involved in managing the wood, purchasing a caravan for accommodating the forestry workers during the weeks spent in the forests was also covered through the project.

Results & Benefits

The equipment procured helped the company to cope with the amount of work committed through contracts. The business became more efficient, reducing the time for extracting the timber from the forest and the negative impact on the environment. Working conditions for workers and for members of the team improved significantly, 14 employment opportunities were generated through the project. A new application for EU funds was elaborated based on the results of the project.

Lessons learnt

The team of foresters understood that by using modern equipment business performance undoubtedly improved, but that equally helps taking care of the environment. Currently they are in the process of applying again for EU funds in order to diversify business activity in the direction of adding value to forestry products and recycling the wood wastes.
