Background

Dessert grape (in particular the 'apirenas' variety) is one of the few commodities for which demand is increasing annually by around 8%, especially in English-speaking and Scandinavian countries. In order to satisfy this demand, there is a need to strengthen the logistics and capacity of producers. So, in response to the need of the agricultural cooperative "Moyca" to market their products, the warehouse and processing plant was built for the correct processing, storing and packaging of the fruit

Objective

The objective of the project was to set up a fruit processing centre close the te orchards in order to process dessert grapes, and to enable producers to process between 120,000kg and 150,0000kg of dessert grapes. The project aimed to create a modern and integral structure to produce high-quality product.

Main activities

The main activities were: construction of the warehouse and dessert grape processing plant (cleaning, storing and packing). The warehouse hosts a packaging line with different processing functions, including the final quality control and labelling, which can respond to the different requirements of the market.

Results & Benefits

Aside from the built extension of 8,682m2 and its capacity for processing and storing from 120,000kg to 150,000kg of fruit. The warehouse hosts a packaging line with different processing functions, including the final quality control and labelling, which can respond to the different requirements of the market. This project permits producers to be more competitive and better oriented to the needs of the market.

Lessons learnt

This project shows how primary produce can be processed using new technology and within a rural environment. A product such as the grape was previously not well commercialized given the lack of processing plants to treat the grape according to the demands of the market.
