Emerging Sectors of the Local Economy
The rural areas of Europe are changing and evolving in response to a variety of new opportunities and challenges. New sectors of the rural economy are emerging and new technological, business and entrepreneurial skills are needed for building economically, socially and environmentally sustainable rural enterprises.
One rapidly emerging sector is ”local food production” and there is a growing interest in the development of “short supply chains” for connecting producers and consumers more directly without an excessive number of intermediate persons or businesses involved.
A group of National Rural Networks (NRN) created a working group for the exchange of knowledge and experiences on short supply chains in April 2011.
