In her first State of the Union address on 16 September 2020, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen presented her vision for a Europe that emerges stronger from the pandemic and leads the way towards a new vitality. The key messages for the future are the need for Europe to become green (stressing the European Green Deal) and to develop and release its digital economy potential. Both these key political elements also hold potential for development of rural areas (i.e. new approach to green energy and hydrogen valleys, ensuring full coverage of rural areas with broadband).

The outbreak of COVID-19 has significantly affected all aspects of life across Europe. In addition to threatening our health, the pandemic is also posing serious challenges to our socio-economic systems. In rural areas, farmers, businesses and communities are particularly affected.
Update: DG AGRI has been contacted by some public authorities who had doubts on how, as regional or local collective bodies, to reply to certain obligatory questions in the public consultation on the Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas which appeared to be more addressed to individual citizens.
The questionnaire has now been adjusted to facilitate the replies of public authorities. Q1 and 13 no longer appear if you indicate in the drop down menu that you are replying as a public authority. Please note that you also have the option to upload an accompanying document after replying to the questionnaire.
