Modernisation and Improvement of the Local Dairy Industry
The modernisation of the milk processing and dairy business belonging to a group of cooperatives integrates new technology into the production process and while delivering high quality products to customers it also respects the environment.
The milk processing business belongs to a joint venture of cooperatives and exists since 1963. It processes cow, goat and sheep milk to produce fresh pasteurised milk and dairy products (a large variety of cheeses, butter, yogurts, etc.). It supplies big and small supermarkets in the region of Thessaly and all over Greece. The company wants to promote its high quality and tasty traditional local dairy products to a greater client base and so it decided to modernise its production equipment and processes in order to become more competitive and better serve the needs of its customers.
The investment modernises the infrastructure, improves production lines and upgrades the internal production processes. The aim is to improve competitiveness and contribute to higher dairy product quality. The project also enhances the processing of production waste so as to better protect the environment.
The investment in new technology enhances the separation of the different types of milk (cow, goat, sheep) upon receipt and the storage of pasteurised milk according to its end use (full-fat milk, semi-skimmed milk, yogurts, etc.). The project is also delivering improved bottling, more efficient automation of the production process for yogurts and cheeses and faster butter and cream packaging.
Results & Benefits
The investment contributes to job creation (5 new jobs), reduced costs and enhanced quality, thereby improving competitiveness. The resulting dairy products are distinguished by their quality and innovative packaging. The project also benefits the local economy as it uses milk produced by local farmers. Investments in waste treatment and energy savings bring environmental benefits while new equipment for health and safety control contributes to the protection of consumers.
The location of the project is critical for this investment: easy accessibility and the availability of skilled local labour reduce costs, while the strategic location where many livestock farms and livestock associations are established justifies the establishment of a milk processing business and increases its chance of success. A rigorous cost-benefit analysis is necessary in such large modernisation investments to ensure the results are aligned with the company’s capacity.
