Background

The idea for the implementation of this cooperation project arised during a meeting on how to solve issues related to tourism seasonality. Two LAGs, of which the Lithuanian specialised in organising tourist activities during summer whilst the Finnish being more experienced in tourism related to winter sports decided to join their effort to overcome this issue. Cooperation was based on the exchange of knowledge and transfer of specific practices between the two regions with the aim of reduce the negative effects of seasonality and make the tourism business more viable.

Common Objectives

The general objective of the project was to develop methods that could be applied in the two regions as a potential solution to address seasonality of tourism. The specific objective of the project was to support the creation of networks of local actors, such as B&B, local restaurants, local sport groups, etc., within and between the cooperating regions to improve their potential to attract tourists in all seasons.

Main Joint Activities

The main activities of the projects were: i) the organisation of study visits in the two regions to get inspiration on practical solutions; ii) development of new products and services for tourists in both regions, which were then discussed with the partners in order to better tailor them; iii) preparation of a development plan for tourism based on feedback received from the partners; iv) preparation of promotional material to promote the regions and disseminate the results of the project.

Results and Transferability

The project enabled the participants to learn how to capitalise on their culture and products in order to promote tourism and improve the viability during the whole year. Both regions prepared a goal-oriented framework to develop the tourist offer, which became the main reference for the organisation of new activities. A CD presenting the project partners, their regions, the firms participating in the project, the project results and good practices was prepared.

Lessons learnt

The two regions benefited from exchange of experiences on the tourism based services of their regions. The exchange of opinions and the discussion about the tourist offer was a key point in the success of the project and particularly in designing successful tourist activities. The use of existing traditions contributed to the success of the project and supported the transfer of knowledge between generations.
