Innovative use of EAFRD support for training and information activities to deliver computer training to the most isolated communities in rural Ireland with an innovative new mobile “Roadster”, a vehicle which is parked on site in the village or town.

Training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a means of providing local people with the necessary skills and ability to harness and manipulate modern technology to their advantage by enhancing and improving their skills base, capacity and confidence - thereby opening up access to new job opportunities. Introducing and supporting ICT provides a tremendous opportunity for rural communities to compete effectively and therefore to generate economic development in the region.

The project aims to deliver computer training to isolated rural communities on the east coast of Ireland. Courses are designed to ensure all levels of competence are addressed. Special emphasis is placed on beginners and intermediate level to encourage those in the community who have not previously had access to ICT training to participate. A key part of project implementation is the involvement of a local 'host group' to oversee the project.

The training is delivered in an innovative new mobile “Roadster”, a vehicle which is parked on site in the village or town generally beside the community centre/parish hall for the duration of the course. A key element of the community based IT training is the provision of a customised programme for school children. A varied range of courses have been delivered for begginners and advanced users (e.g. ECDL, Photoshop and Internet for Farm Families).

Over 250 local people (mainly female) have been trained ranged in age from 5th school class to 87 years old. A small number of participants have progressed to work as ICT tutors at local level. This project has led to two community organisations seeking to develop community ICT Training facilities in their own area, thereby sustaining the delivery of IT training at local level for the foreseeable future.

There is an added-value learning for the members of the host group who have to organise, schedule and manage the process at all stages from the information/research evening to the registration process through to the final graduation evening and the presentation of certificates. Many of the volunteers learn about project management and administration and this is beneficial on a personal level and for the group as a whole.
