Background

The Onion Road near the lake Peipsi joins three cultures and two nationalities. The promotion of the mystical and multicultural area of Peipsiveere is at the heart of the tourism entrepreneurs. This project was thus conceived to offer good experiences to visitors of lake Peipsi.

Objective

The project aimed to (a) create a shared marketing theme for the area; (b) develop cooperation between entrepreneurs for the creation of a tourism-entrepreneurs network of Peipsiveere; (c) raise awareness of Peipsiveere as a tourism-destination in local and foreign markets through marketing and promotional activities; and (d) create a tourism route of the Onion Road.

Main activities

To achieve its objective the project (a) created an internet home page shared by the 21 tourism enterprises it managed to put together; (b) organised round-tables and trainings; (c) participated to trade and tourist fairs; (d) elaborated a variety of information provision and advertising materials.

Results & Benefits

The project provided a collaboration platform for 21 tourism entrepreneurs. The tourists to the area have greatly benefited from the project as now they have the opportunity to visit museums and churches, enjoy the Peipsi lake, make handicraft, go fishing, spend time in nature, taste local food and take a good nap. It is evident that now tourists enjoy the region and do not just drive through on their way to another destination.

Lessons learnt

Trust being built among the leaders of the network and tourism entrepreneurs though lengthy to be achieved reinforces confidence and the potential for synergy. Tourists favour being provided with consistent information and service.
