Agrosev Farming Company - Modernisation to Improve Competitiveness

Summary

EAFRD funds were used to aid the restructuring and modernisation of the farming company Agrosev in middle Slovakia. Its competitiveness significantly increased as the quality and efficiency of crop and livestock production improved.

Background

The firm Agrosev had 2,466 hectares of farmable land at its disposal, however it was failing to exploit its full agricultural potential. Agrosev used outdated technology and machinery, did not have the ability to manage livestock production, and also failed to effectively manage and use the wide range of natural resources availiable. It was therefore decided to undertake significant farm modernisation process to fully realise the potential of the area and the company.

Objective

The project aimed to increase the competitiveness of the agricultural firm through the optimal utilisation of production factors and the application of new technologies and innovations.

Main activities

The activities of the project involved: i) structural and technological investments for the reconstruction of buildings for dairy cows on a farm in Detva and young cattle on the Želobudza farm in Dúbravy; ii) the reconstruction and modernisation of storage facilities in the village of Vígľaš; iii) the purchase of equipment for crop production. A total of 18 new machines were purchased, including a sprayer, two spreaders, two mowers, a feed mixer wagon, a cutter and a tractor.

Results & Benefits

The purchase of new equipment has resulted in numerous benefits for Agrosev, including: 1) increasing the yield per hectare; 2) increasing efficiency; 3) reducing fuel consumption and repair costs for machinery and equipment; 4) ensuring quality crop production; 5) ensuring sufficient fodder and it's distribution for livestock production. Thus the primary aim of increasing the firm’s competitiveness was achieved. The area of agricultural land, all farmed more efficiently, increased by 1,543 ha.

Lessons learnt

This project has provided both positive and negative examples of the uses of EAFRD funding. A positive being that well focused support from the Rural Development Programme can increase the competitiveness and efficiency of farms, and also improve animal welfare. However, it has also shown that problems can occur due to the long and arduous process of project approval, particularly when funding payments are only effected annually.
